The perfume should be clear, with a consistent color. It should not be too oily. Compare the color of the perfume to that in a real bottle in a department store. Counterfeit perfumes, which may contain harsh chemicals or be made under unsanitary conditions, do not last long and can irritate skin and cause rashes.

Real perfume comes in packaging with the label on it. Often you can buy a bottle of counterfeit perfume without any packaging. The fakes' bottles may also be scratched and look worn. The bogus bottle of Michael Kors perfume, above, is smaller than the standard bottles sold in retail outlets.

Look closely at the LV monogram and the flowers. They will be symmetric on an authentic Louis Vuitton bag or wallet. Often, the monogram can appear upside down on the backside of a bag or wallet because the company uses one continuous piece of leather; that probably means it is authentic. In addition, no Louis Vuitton item will come in plastic or have plastic anywhere on it.

i can't afford this kind of useless stuff. I think the average person wouldn't buy it either

I guessed them all corrrectly, but I still don't see what is wrong with having a fake, as long as you KNOW it was fake and were not being tricked into paying a lot for it.  I'd rather not waste money on overpriced things that nobody really needs.  I'd rather spend money on my children, grandchildren, and charities, and I'll carry a fake pocketbook and wear a fake watch to do it, if that's what it takes.

I am astounded that people pay thousands for a bag!! I would rather have a knock-off because I can buy it without feeling I spent a lot. I recently bought a wallet and a bag in NYC and it was beautiful. I can buy a lot more for 20-40 dollars than one for a thousand.

When you spend well above your limit, or simply spend outrageously because you can, then you are showing off.

Teilani,

You're saying billionaires can't spend hardly any money because it will look like they're showing off???  Disappointed

Captain, I mean you no disrespect but I do have to ask. Maybe I'm confused but when you say "Fakes and knock-offs are for those that too poor to afford the real status symbols of their vanity."  By vanity you mean what ?  There are many people like myself who can afford to pay for quality, but refuse to pay for 'status symbols. '  Many more buy knock offs because they refuse to pay the crazy prices. Add up the per centages of people who got the question wrong,  with  those  that  didn't know the answer. You will notice that the majority can't tell the difference anyways. It costs  so little to produce real leather bags.  I'm serious even designer brand jeans are mass produced overseas. The cost of shipping them here is more than the production cost.  The jeans have no magic fabric, its just a higher  thread count cotten.  It is the greedy designers that  are their own worst enemies. If they didn't charge rediculous amts of money for their jeans there would be no demand for knock offs. Same with purses. Or just about anything else. People pay for the brand.  In fact so many are  charged up to the max on their charge cards, now more than ever. Several yrs back I made a decision, no more charging.  If I don't have the cash, I can't afford it.  Because by the time  your done paying all the interest on minimum payments,  its twice as much. But you are absolutley right when you say  "quality goods at a reasonable price"

I just commented to another writer that I could understand if designers wanted to triple their money it would be one thing.  Instead we have these Name Brands that are so greedy they deserve  what they are getting as far as knockoffs. When it costs no more than $20 -$25 to produce a fine leather purse, what right do they have to charge $2 THOUSAND? Just for a designer name?  If you don't believe me look into mass produced items, wholesale cost to produce.  Seriously how much do most of you think it costs to make a 'designer pair of jeans'? About $3.50.,tops.  I kid you not. There is no magic dungaree fabric. Think about it... By being greedy they are creating a demand for knock offs themselves. Many of us are already aware that in the far east often times these products are made by children and women who are virtually slaves working 12-15 hrs a day 6-7 days a week. Not just  for knock offs either.  A few celebrities where found out a few yrs back to be part owners in these companies.  Even Walmart uses these  factories.  Sorry but no purse is worth more than $100 just because of the name on it. You may think your paying for 'quality' Think again. We are kidding ourselves when we pay top dollar for tap water in a fancy  plastic bottle.  We are so used to spending, charging things we really can't afford, claiming bankruptcy and going broke. For what?  If I don't have the cash for it,  I no longer buy it. Simple.

I tend to think that as soon as a 'knock off' starts making the knock-offs, it cheapens the real thing.

Plus....... if you are carrying around a 1000.00 purse, someone will mug you....they know you have money!!!!

"It should be about what looks good, not what the labels says"  No offense but I am confused on your point...If what the label says doesn't matter why would you be counting  how many in the food court had fakes, or the women in front of you.  It doesn't cost designers ridiculous amounts of money to produce the bags.  That is what  I find to be nuts.  If they spend $20-$25 to produce a pocketbook, what right do they have to charge $2K? They create the  demand for fakes themselves by overcharging to begin with. I could see if they wanted to triple their money, say charge $75 $100. for quality goods.  If you looked into it you would find like anything else mass produced, it is not expensive at all.  I truly mean no harm or disrespect, I learn everyday.  But I won't be conned by greedy  designers either.

You get what you pay for. But, there is a breaking point. When you spend well above your limit, or simply spend outrageously because you can, then you are showing off. Quality doesn't have to cost 10's of thousands of dollars just because of a name. Sure, crap that falls apart quickly isn't the answer, but looking for quality at logical prices is a whole lot smarter and wiser than spending 6,000$ for a purse just because it has a name attached to it that advertises 'money' to those in the know.

On the fakers, there is also a level of honor that should be in business. Fraud is fraud, stealing someones name to sell your crap is wrong. The fact that a fool will spend through the nose for that knockoff simply to have something with that name on it makes the buyer just as foolish and downright stupid as the seller who abuses that lust for expensive stuff.

I think if you can afford it go for it! id buy more expensive things because they are usually higher in quality. if you cant afford it then the cheaper stuff is ok to. but on the other hand, the knockoff brands shouldn't be using the expensive names on their products.Open-mouthed

Saturday, November 07, 2009 8:06:36 PM

Sorry, but nothing feels better than the real thing.  Even if you can't afford it you should try it some time.  Open-mouthed

The real and fake Gucci and Louis Vuitton bags looked equally cheap!  I wouldn't use them if they were given to me.  Tacky!

Well stated! I go out of my way to avoid advertising for a product or company on my apparel.  It makes me crazed when I can't find a tee shirt for my children without a name written across the back or front. ABSURD!

I think you and I could shop together quite well.  I have never been able to figure out why a woman or a man would pay these high and ridiculous prices to wear a designers product.  It's the same fabric regardless of the item and the designer must smile and laugh all the way to the bank each and every day.  I want his job and income and I'll continue to shop at TJ's, Marshalls and bargain stores.  Thank you, I'll put my money in the bank.  Ha, ha, ha.......dummies!
Saturday, November 07, 2009 3:56:23 PM
If I wore or carried an item with a designer's name all over it..I would expect to be paid for advertising.
