MySpace traffic down, uncertainty up

Site's managers don't seem to know what to do with the fallen star

MySpace is losing so many visitors that it probably won't get all of the $900 million it expected from a key Google deal.

That's a pretty devastating blow for the site, which signed the search deal with Google back in 2006, when it was still one of the Internet's crown jewels.

But now, MySpace has lost too much ground to Facebook and Twitter. And it's looking like Google won't even have to make the minimum payments promised under the deal. Google was supposed to pay at least $900 million based on certain traffic milestones, but those aren't being met.

It's unclear how much of that $900 million is going to be missed. In Wednesday's News Corp. (NWS) earnings call, Rupert Murdoch appeared to suggest $300 million, according to MediaMemo. But the company later clarified that it would be closer to $100 million for the year.

At any rate, it's not a good sign for MySpace, which now says it's "not trying to beat Facebook." Or Twitter.

So what is MySpace actually trying to do?

"It's a work in progress," executives said repeatedly during the call, according to MediaMemo.

I met the love of my life in MySpace. i will never leave MySpace. Facebook is for lazy stupid people who cant handle HTML. MySpace is the best because you can customize your page and make very cool slides!!!

myspace was alright, until a bunch of kids from high school started joining then it all went to hell.  the giant **** of html on peoples pages doesnt help either.  myspace is losing search rep because either everyone has already searched myspace on google, 0r they already have it bookmarked and set as homepage they dont need to search for it. personally i think all these sites are just a waste of time for people. having a flashy page doesnt make you cool. it just show the lack of social life they have.

The customizability of Myspace is exactly why it has been abandoned by people who are "professional" and "collegiate" (anyone over 20). It allows people to turn their pages into huge unreadable messes. You may think putting huge blingage **** bunnies all over your pink page with yellow text is awesome but it's not. A little bit of style is OK but black text on a white background beats a Lisa Frank factory explosion any day.

I think myspace should not because of facebook or anything. Plus Facebook is a site for old people and searching for friends. Twitter is just a random search site and its sucks like hell. Twitter cant do **** to myspace but facebook is really getting alot of people coming and it keep increasing by the day. And the farmville is really lame at the point but the poker is great since you get achievements and more chips. But i'm not part of Myspace nor Facebook, Its all about that Tagged.

i did the whole myspace thing ages ago when i was a kid but then i noticed how anal about your profile you have to be if you "dont" want to be concidered a social ****! something i dont really have time for, or care about, then facebook came along and instead having some people i know on it it (like myspace) it had eeeeeveryone on it, facebook is also probably the leading cause of a lot of socials around my university as well from sports groups to rights activists. As for twitter, im not much of an update person on facebook, all i've heard is its like every five minutes! who has that sort of time to waste in the day! facebook will win, twitter will live on and myspace will limp to an inevitable death in a couple of years when everyone realises its a badly designed social networking site!!!

All of these social networking sites, like myspace, twitter, and facebook, just suck. They are horrible and people go on them all the time and there is nothing to do on them! screw that crap!

I LOVE myspace, and I've NEVER been interested in Facebook.Too collegiate and corporate for my taste.I like that MYSPACE is so customiseable, and like someone else said on here, yeah it has definitely helped me get sorta familiar with HTML as I've worked on my page through the few years I've been on it.I like connecting with old real; friends as well as meeting new acquaintances.I keep discovering old blasts from my past, and getting turned onto really awesome music and political movements and charities I care about. For ME,MYSPACE is a great thing that enriches my life!

I love Myspace the best!!  Music (I wish it played when you signed on to a page again), individual decorating, simple use! Plus, I learned so much about webb building while creating my page.  Plus, I got to think that maybe Bob Dylan really did see my comment!  Just for a minute.  A fantasy.  I have made wonderful friends from all over the world!  Went to meet some of them.

Facebook is my old high school and neighborhood folks.  Amazing connections to family and friends that I haven't spoken with in decades

But I still love Myspace the best!

The reason I stopped using Myspace was because I was getting tired of filtering spam and getting cluttered with advertisements.

I was in it for the networking, but the networking pretty much got over run by bots and hacked accounts.

Facebook is clean and lets me know what people are up to on one single page. No fake comments or chainmail trouble.

I love twitter for its simplicity.
Although I can do without knowing a friend of mine is eating toast and crying alone in a dark basement.

People who hate networking sites should go back to their
caves and watch analog television. If you're not gonna embrace the future, then why are you on the internet?

You can use these websites to pass time, or to do something productive. I make these websites useful for myself.
I am an animator and I use them to get my work out there.

I thank Myspace for its fun while It lasted.

Myspace put the nail in it's own coffin when it signed that deal with the record labels. They did it to themselves, now myspace music is useless. The songs don't even automatically play anymore and they are paying record labels for fake plays they do themselves.
