19. SkyBitz
What it does: SkyBitz's satellite-based Global Locating System can tell trucking companies where their trailers are, whether they're loaded and whether they've been sitting too long at a customer's warehouse.Why it's growing: Trucking is an old-line industry that's starting to realize the benefits of technology. There are about 5.5 million trailers on the road in North America, and only 400,000 of them now use a tracking system. Of that 400,000, 30% use SkyBitz, estimates CEO Rick Burtner.
What's noteworthy: expanding overseas and into new industries, such as rail and marine. "We hope someday that we're the company that is protecting our ports so that the bad guys don't send a dirty bomb in one of those containers," Burtner says.
