16. Rome

What it does: Rome's software helps large companies assess their risk in deals that involve commodities or energy markets.

Why it's growing: After the Enron collapse, Rome prospered. Many companies weren't easily able to unravel how much financial exposure they had to the many companies adversely affected in the post-Enron chain reaction. As companies sought to better manage their risks in choosing business partners, Rome won customers.

18. SellingSource.com

What it does: generates online customer leads for lenders that offer subprime loans, auto loans and credit cards. It also offers identity verification, credit reporting, data storage and data processing.

Why it's growing: because of the growth of the subprime market, plus a breadth of services. Founder Derek LaFavor says other technology providers aren't offering lenders such a mix.

What's noteworthy: It's hard to find skilled labor in Las Vegas. About 75% of SellingSource's employees are relocated from somewhere else.

19. SkyBitz

What it does: SkyBitz's satellite-based Global Locating System can tell trucking companies where their trailers are, whether they're loaded and whether they've been sitting too long at a customer's warehouse.

Why it's growing: Trucking is an old-line industry that's starting to realize the benefits of technology. There are about 5.5 million trailers on the road in North America, and only 400,000 of them now use a tracking system. Of that 400,000, 30% use SkyBitz, estimates CEO Rick Burtner.

What's noteworthy: expanding overseas and into new industries, such as rail and marine. "We hope someday that we're the company that is protecting our ports so that the bad guys don't send a dirty bomb in one of those containers," Burtner says.
