In a recession that has forced consumers back to basics, Alex Steiner decided to help fill a basic need: tables and chairs. Steiner created Banquet Tables Pro while working days as a Web designer and search-engine-optimization expert at a Tampa, Fla., e-commerce company.

His Web site, which sells tables and other restaurant and banquet supplies wholesale, went live Jan. 10. Its success since then helped make his project one of the 100 businesses honored this year by leading home-business Web site StartupNation as America's top home businesses. Banquet Tables Pro placed first in the Recession Buster category, one of 10 categories in the contest.
