Sumner Redstone likes to boast that at Viacom he treats "everyone like a member of my family." But being treated like a member of the Redstone family can include being sued, belittled and publicly ridiculed.
Daughter Shari discovered this the hard way when she served as the company's nonexecutive vice chairwoman. Her bid to increase outside oversight of the Viacom board and institute performance-driven compensation angered her father. When asked by a reporter about his succession plan, the elder Redstone said of Shari, "The reason she won't succeed me is that she isn't qualified." Ouch.
