For years, German brothers Adolf and Rudolf Dassler manufactured shoes together. Adolf, meticulous and inventive, was the craftsman; Rudolf, outspoken and gregarious, was the salesman.

Legend has it that, while the two men and their families were huddled in a bomb shelter during World War II, Adolf exclaimed, "The dirty bastards are back again!" He was referring to the Allied forces, but Rudolf was convinced Adolf was talking about Rudolf's family.
