(Updated 8:55 a.m. ET) Stock futures gained on Thursday after weekly jobless claims fell to their lowest level in 10 months.

Futures for the S&P 500 were up 4.3 points to 1,051.3, and were 7.7 points above fair value. Futures for the Nasdaq rose 8.5 points to 1,695.d, and were 15.9 points above fair value.

First-time claims for jobless benefits fell by 20,000 to a seasonally adjusted 512,000, according to the Labor Department. Economists had expected 523,000 new claims.

This comes before the department’s much anticipated nonfarm payroll and employment data for October, scheduled to be released Friday. Retail sales figures will also be in focus today.

 Bing: More on unemployment

The major indices surged on Wednesday, with the Dow gaining more than 150 points at its peak after the Federal Open Market Committee signaled it would keep its key rate near zero. But stocks retreated in the last hour of trading and the major indices closed in mixed territory.

Stocks were down overseas after the Bank of England said it would keep its key interest rate at 0.5%. The FTSE in London was down by 0.6%, while the DAX in Frankfurt was lower by 0.5%. In Asia, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng lost 0.6% as Japan’s Nikkei fell 1.3%.

In this morning's earnings news, Toyota surprised investors with a second quarter profit, while Time Warner Cable reported net income at 76 cents a share, beating analysts’ estimates by 1 cent.

The tech sector may also be a focus following Cisco’s after hours earnings beat on Wednesday. The tech bellwether and Dow component reported adjusted earnings at 36 cents a share versus a consensus estimate at 31 cents.

Crude oil was down 45 cents to $79.95 a barrel. Gold was up $3.20 to $1,090.50 an ounce.

Riche...count on it.  I like the word Americans.  We do not need more invasion into our country.  Not money; that is not it.  It is our's and it must stop.  We can work harder and fight harder than any nation in the known history of mankind.  Proven; other than when we weren't given a chance to fight.  That is a statement we should all remember;  what the hell have we become.  Greed is us?  I think not.  Socialism is not us.  We are the devil dogs and we do fight for ours and we scare the **** out of people when we do. And; we have not forgotten that nor do our predecesors that borne us. They are watching us.  They can call us the great Satan - these countries we support - it's time we showed that not one promise we will honor from them until and unless they honor us.  This is history.  And; we are not scared.  Just look around.  No age.  You want those that die younger not to have us there?  I am there with them.

The jobless rate has to decline as there are really no positions they can cut unless they are going to close their doors, oops that's coming next year, by 06/01/10 we will be at about 30 million unemployed Americans, now that's a change we all can count on ......

when will our damn country wake up and help americans instead of helping every damn country in the world first and getting the expected kick in the ass from them that we always receive in payment for our help.  we have to be the dumbest country in the world for not taking care of our own first

first of all - is Disney corp out of their f'ing mind !!!!

2nd - we will never really know the true un employment in our country because once it runs out you are no longer counted and the chances of you getting another job is too slim to think about unless you are an extremely qualified person for the job and then you have to go through a head hunting firm like my daughter has just to get a damn interview.  it is no longer going to apply for a good job anymore - it has to be found for you

This is a bunch of bull.  The minute they pass the extension the unemployment rate will rise - Duh!!! They need to find a new way of figuring out this number besides the number of jobless claims.  And to everyone who thinks that they should not pass another extension - watch a close family member do all they can to get a job, sell everything they have, and be almost homeless depending on this for survival then tell me it's steeling money - get off your high horses!!!!  Not everybody is screwing the system!!!

Oh come on the numbers lie what about the thousand of people who are unemployed and can't collect who's counting those numbers. I've been unemployed for some time and can't collect because of the system The same system that reporting these numbers.. The government will give billions to other countries but right here on us soil we are struggling . No cost of living for the elderly give me a break they are the ones who can't work and need the extra money to pay for medicine and food. As for the Market its the rich getting richer. We have no middle class white collar worker anymore its the rich and poor no happy medium. Wake up America

Jobless claims under 500,000 mean that hiring is going on.  If that occurs and remains so for a few weeks and months, we will be in job growth.  Extending unemployment is ridiculous.  Just put these people on the welfare roles.  My neighbors son was whining because he got laid off.  Now he collects unemployment and sits on his butt all day doing nothing.  I know many others like this.  Unfortunately, there is no real way to check to see if these people are even looking for jobs.  UI is open to a lot of abuse.

OMG....   Get real I wish that they would report what is really going on in this country,  Senate is in the midst of passing another UI Extension because of the lack of jobs, and the "Market" is sitting on edge because of this.....   The "Market" needs to Die... !!   It is half the reason we are where we are today and there isn't too many people that I know that wouldn't agree with me.   Once this Extension is passed again.... LOOK out because the market will nose dive once again....  but till then you all  just sit back and make your easy steeling money...  Karma is a *itch... and it does come around!!
