Pepsi apologizes for pickup app
But the beverage and snack food company is still offering an iPhone app to help guys pick up women.
PepsiCo's (PEP) tweeted an apology for its new Apple (AAPL) iPhone app that is designed to help guys pick up the ladies.
PepsiCo's launched the new app, "AMP UP Before You Score," to promote its AMP energy drink. The app alleges to help guys "get lucky" when they're out on the town by helping prepare them to meet 24 different types of women.
"Our app tried 2 show the humorous lengths guys go 2 pick up women," Pepsi tweeted on both Amp Energy's and Pepsi's Twitter pages. "We apologize if it's in bad taste & appreciate your feedback." Pepsi did not go so far as to remove the app from Apple's iPhone app store, however.
From the "Rebound Girl" to "Married" and "Cougar," the app gives a profile for that type of woman, including a cartoon picture and details about her likely interests, so guys "know what makes her tick before you open your mouth, so she'll like what she hears when you do," according to the iTunes description.
Most importantly, the app also advises on which pickup lines will work.
Some of the other 24 types: the "Aspiring Actress," the "Artist," "Women's Studies Major," and "Out-Of-Your-League Girl."

And the most charming aspect of the new app is that after a night out, the app allows a person to use a "Brag List" feature where any successes can be documented and broadcast via e-mail, Facebook or Twitter.
While the new app has caused a stir, it won't contribute to PepsiCo's bottom line -- it's free. But PepsiCo is hoping it'll help those young pickup artists boost AMP sales; the company last week said revenue in the third quarter fell 1.5% to $11.08 billion, missing analysts' expectations of $11.25 billion.
Reviews on iTunes ranged from "so cool" and "crazy awesome" to "so lame" and "offensive."
PepsiCo's stock was unaffected -- shares closed down 32 cents to $60.60 on Tuesday; they were up 28 cents to $60.88 this morning. Apple shares had gained $1.49 to $191.56 this morning.
Apple just weeks ago celebrated the 2 billionth iPhone app download.
