Coach accuses Target of copying bags
The high-end retailer says Target began selling reproductions of its designs this summer.
The bull's-eye is now on Target (TGT).
The discount retailer is being sued by Coach (COH) for trademark infringement and unfair competition. Coach filed a complaint last week in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, alleging that Target copied two of its designs, its Ergo fold-over handbag and its Signature Patchwork line.
Target began selling handbags this summer with "exact and/or confusingly similar reproductions of Coach's Ergo designs and Signature Patchwork designs," Coach said in its complaint.
Coach is seeking injunctive relief and attorney's fees. Coach also wants Target to stop selling the bags, the complaint said.
"We are currently looking into this situation and working with our vendor partner," Jana O'Leary, a Target spokeswoman, told The Associated Press. "It always has been -- and continues to be -- Target's policy to respect the intellectual property rights of others."
This isn't the first battle between the two companies. In 2006, Coach sued Target for copying another one of its handbags. The companies eventually settled the case.
Target has also been the target of other suits from Lucky Brand Dungarees and Williams-Sonoma (WSM) in recent years.
