Does Mona Lisa like McNuggets?

McDonald's is banking on it, opening an outpost in Paris's Louvre museum.

McDonald's (MCD) plans to open its 1,142nd outlet in France next month to celebrate its 30th anniversary in the Gallic country, according to the U.K. paper The Daily Telegraph, and the location is at the pinnacle of all things cultural and classy: the Louvre.

Visitors to the museum will soon be able to enjoy their Le Big Macs and pommes frites after studying the likes of Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa" or the Winged Victory of Samothrace at McDonald's new burger bar and a McCafe. They will be sited in the underground approach to the museum in central Paris, known as the Carrousel du Louvre.

But gastronomes and aesthetes are outraged.

"This is the last straw," one art historian working at the Louvre told the Telegraph. "This is the pinnacle of exhausting consumerism, deficient gastronomy and very unpleasant odors in the context of a museum," he told the Daily Telegraph.

Another expert was equally horrified. Didier Rykner of the Art Tribune Web site described the idea as "shocking," the newspaper said.

But "the Louvre welcomes the fact that the entirety of visitors and customers, French or foreign, can enjoy such a rich and varied restaurant offer, whether in the museum area or gallery," the museum said in a statement.

McDonald's says France is its biggest market outside the U.S., the Telegraph reported, adding that the Louvre is the world’s most-visited museum.

A can of tomato soup ?  I would rather see Mick D there.

The Golden Arches are Americana Art even if you don't like

it.

I am happy to see the French are able to do this for us since

they don't seem to like the Big Mac that much.

Yes been there done that... so I do not think it is ridiculous

at all.. just good business :-)  Can I biggy side this for you.

I can't imagine the reasoning behind this. What ridiculousness. I have never been to the Louvre, but as far as I was ever concerned it was supposed to embody class and sophistication, it was supposed to be about art, and not just any art...but the best of the best.

And now they want to add a greasy fast food restaurant in it? As I've said, I've never been to the Louvre, but they're allowing this in the gallery??

I can't imagine what they were thinking. This is ridiculous. I wish they would seriously reconsider this decision.

Cmon naysayers ! We live in a completely different world in these our days. Now, if McDonalds's has sold over a billion burgers can that all be wrong ? The company is a winner and in todays budgets , it is still a deal , and they do offer healthy substitutes . This is great for the kids. A few years ago , I ate at a restaurant within 1/4 mile of the Iffel Tower ,and it cost quite a bit more than a special at Mickey D's .

Get over it and xpect more of this nonsense in the years to come . I feel bad for all those who are losing jobs . I'll bet they wish they can have a Big Mac now and only dream of a trip to the Louvre .

I think it is atrocious that McD's is setting up shop at the Louvre.  After living in Paris for six years, is it any wonder the majority of the working class Frenchmen find Americans too pushy.  We continually try to inundate their country (and others) with our culture.  We need to respect theirs; there are actually many wonderful things we could learn from the French.

I've travelled a lot and am always interested in art, so the main museums of any town or region are number one on my itinerary. I ordinarily spend about $4 for lunch when I am employed, though the last couple of years before my semi-retirement, I carried my food.  I am very appreciative of French cuisine though dining upon it is usually a domestic undertaking more than eating out.  It was my experience that any sit-down lunch while traveling cost at least $9, often more.  The values were at least fair in almost all cases, so value wasn't the problem.  It just cost more to have a restaurant lunch or take-out lunch than I usually spent, and often much more when compared to brown bagging.  So, when I travelled I got the skimpiest meals possible for lunch (fruit, cheese, bread/wine and soup, etc.).  Those cheapest meals were in franchised fast food places most of the time.

As an American, I am conditioned to fast food pleasures and lack thereof when compared to a fine quality budget dinner restaurant.  I will accept the McDonalds where ever it may be - EXCEPT of course in Walden, where I would probably organize a lynch mob to destroy the premises.  For great art and a $4 lunch, I can make some adjustments  for overall package consistency.

I just returned from Europe, and under duress went to several McD's there in France and Italy.  McD management obviously has no control of hygiene, sanitation or food worker rules.  I didn't eat the food at ANY of them, and the restroom was so bad in Rome I almost tossed cookies from the smell.  Counter personnel handled money and food barehanded, and put fingers on the inside of drink cups before filling them.  I could go on, but my point is, if this is what the Louvre needs to attract people to the exhibits they better cover everything with Plexiglas to avoid grease marks.

Some people think that french food is healthier than a McD hamburger, well i can't stand the taste of foie gras, boudin, the raw meats and the loads of butter in all that french food.

i would enjoy a cheese burger (extra ketchup) and potatoes much more than a dinner a Maxim's.

stop living in the dark ages.

It's funny that most here assume the only foreigners who go to the Louvre are Americans.  People from all over the world go there and some might be more excited to see a McDonald's than the Mona Lisa... It's all about perspective and we appear a little full of ourselves to assume that this is all about US  A.

1142 stores in France over 30 years, I'll bet that French folks eat at McD's...
