Help wanted: Pot-clinic critic (seriously)

Denver's Westword weekly is looking for a writer to review marijuana dispensaries.

Posted by Elizabeth Strott on Friday, October 2, 2009 7:21 AM

Marijuana © Halfdark/fstop/Getty ImagesMedical marijuana is legal in Colorado, and testing the dispensaries that offer it could actually bring in a paycheck -- for real.

The Denver Westword is looking for a freelance writer to review the state's marijuana dispensaries. The ad asked, "Do you have a medical condition that necessitates marijuana? Do you have a way with words? If so, Westword wants you to join the ranks as our freelance marijuana-dispensary reviewer."

Colorado is one of 13 states that allow the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes for patients who have cancer, glaucoma, HIV and other conditions involving severe pain, and has more than 60 dispensaries. About 15,000 people are registered in Colorado to use medical marijuana with a doctor's note.

Westword described the position saying, "the job is simple: Visit a different dispensary each week (without revealing you're working for Westword) and pen concise, impartial and snappy accounts of your experiences. Keep in mind this isn't about assessing the quality of the medicine on site; it's about evaluating the quality of the establishment. After all, we can't have our reviewer be stoned all the time."

The position requires a state medical marijuana ID (or the ability to get one), a resume and a one-paragraph essay on "What Marijuana Means to Me."

The ad did not give any pay -- or bonus -- information. But the ability to smoke for work might just be a pot lover's bonus dream.

I totally agree with nonameavail.

The pot heads that are lazy and don't work are like that without pot.  That's usually their regular character.  They are the ones that ruin it for the rest of the smokers.

Also...I'm 57,  and have been around plenty of alcoholics and drinkers.  I even bartended for several years, so yes I definitely can attest to a huge list of terrible effects of alcohol.   I can't stand or understand

people that drink alot, then put down pot smokers.  It's hysterical.   They haven't a clue. It's just ignorance.

By the way, I'm not saying having a glass of wine or a beer or 2  all bad, in moderation.  I do it.  My preference is pot, for all the good reasons. I just can't  indulge much due to work policies. No alcohol policy, just a drug policy.  I think we should have a new policy at work.  If you are called on for a drug test, you get to pick a manager, any manager,  to get tested with you!  How about that?  Nope...that would leave us manager..less! Hmmm

Unfortunately, the worst mood altering, dangerous, sometimes violent drug is legal...Alcohol.

I have smoked pot for 40 years. I will smoke it for the rest of my days if it's illegal or legal. I don't care what anybody on this planet say's weed was put on Earth to harvest and use. If you are old enough to go to WAR and die for your country then you are old enough to make the CHOICE of what you want to put in your body and NO MAN has the right to tell you otherwise!  Big brother can play whatever game he wants as far as helping the Rich get Richer at the poor mans expence but if he dare confront me for my use of the erb I will then take upon my right to bear arms and defend what I believe to be my constitutional rights! As best said by "Amomof2VA            Cannabis should be embraced as the wonder plant it truly is.

Cannabis is a blessing - industrial, medicinal, spiritual, and recreational.

Marijuana prohibition is a violation of my constitutional rights.

"Make the most of the hemp seed and sow it everywhere."
George Washington

"Hemp is of the first necessity to the wealth and protection of the country."
Thomas Jefferson

And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
Genesis 1:29 "

Can you imagine how funny the news on tv would be if they all were high?....LMAO.....now that would be entertaining television.....and they probably wouldn't show as much filth. Legalize weed.....I haven't smoked in years....ONLY because my job has a habit of drug testing....and I need to work.

The discussion over the legalization of mj is SOOO worn-out!  As a daily user for over 20 years, I've made the arguement for legalization 100's of times...using the very same facts and personal anecdotes used in this discussion.  The people who argue to keep it illegal or restricted to medical use almost always say the same things and seem to cling to their uninformed opinion as if it were a religion.  Unfortunately, ignorance about the affects of mj is not a barrier to forming an opinion about it or the people who use it.

Despite smoking mj daily for over 20 years...I can tell you I'm no burnout.  I've got an advance college degree which I paid for myself and earned while working full time.  I'm a father of two and proudly attend my kids school and sporting events.  I don't beat my kids or wife, but I do pick-up trash regularly in my neighborhood.  I'm also an athlete.  Using mj has not precluded me from being any of these things...but somehow the govt. needs to protect me from myself!?!?!

People who enjoy mj recreationally or medicinally are put in a position of having to defending their use of this natural, enjoyable, and beneficial product.  I don't want to have to be a cheerleader for mj, I just want to use it when I want to...discretly...just like coffee, wine, or beer.  If others can gain a real and measurable medical benefit from the same product, then all the better.  We can even make fuel and clothing from mj.

If you are a person who wants keep mj illegal for the sake of society, then you should set your sites on tobacco (a real and documented menace to all who use it or live with those who do) and leave us humble mj users alone.

I just finished watching runfromthecure[thericksimpsonstory]. I agree fully with Rick. The world governments and medical commuites DO NOT WANT A CURE! They want to control and make money!

here in texas the likelihood of legalizing mary are about as good as there being no more mosquitoes in texas however there are many of us that can see the benefits not only in med care but also in revenue to be honest though if you can have alcohol as a consenting 21 yr old adult or tobacco @ 18 then the choice to choose mary is a no brainer anyone who still believes  in the hysteria created by the gov. and alcohol industry needs to turn their voters reg. card please.

****? Are you serious? The only paranoia going on is the fact that Marijuana is illegal. You use it knowing it's illegal you would be paranoid too. And FACT! Marijuana is way safer than alcohol(no ifs, ands, or buts, about it!)  Angry

I just have to put my 2 cents worth in this forum, the user highonlife has rattled my cage and I feel the need to reply.  To all the people who are trying to have a normal discussion and debate on here, please don’t let people like highonlife drown the issues with his imaginary banter.  The tactics highonlife is using really has only 1 result, to put all the focus on him!  By chanting nonrealistic, nonfactual information with adding personal opinions to "push the buttons" of responders on this site, highonlife has put focus on himself and taken this forum off task and focus from the actual debate.  The actual beliefs of this person are probably not even accurate and should be seen as a "cry for help" with other issues in this person’s life.  The only way to respond to this type of person is by NOT responding to his opinions and by realizing there is no informative value other than to "bash" and "stereotype" people around him.  It is clear that highonlife is going through some emotional problems being either lonely or having a bigger medical issue of depression, PTSD, Obesity, usually from childhood abuse.  The "strong" opinions and lashing out by highonlife and the hanging out on this site only to respond to people responding to him is a clear indication that he has nothing better to do, and the "anger" shown by him is an indicator of past abuse.  Anyone who runs a successful business would not have the time nor the demeanor to reply and respond to issues of this nature, usually people who care about the issue at hand and feel compelled to help the situation follow forums and articles and responses to this degree.  To accuse all mj smokers of being on welfare and ignoring their children or alcoholics beating their wives seems to be the only hold this person has on the reality of these issues.  I am sorry for your misfortunes highonlife, it sounds like you are speaking more from experience then anything, and I am willing to reach out and help you if you need it, but when a parent allows their children to run rampant and cannot handle their children or a husband beats on his wife, they have deeper issues then being just a marijuana user.  I can see all types of people doing the same types of abuse without drugs involved, as well as someone with depression, or other life changing medical issues, so the accusations you are using to justify your "opinion" have no merit in my opinion.  These types of parents, that you are using as cause for your debate, would do the same abuses to their children or families regardless of the drug they are using.  I am sorry you have experienced such problems in your life that you feel the need to stereotype and judge everyone who uses mj.  Just so you know, my wife and I have never used drugs in our lives, we are both the same age, after 18 months of schooling to become a RN and 2 months of actually working as an RN, my wife came down with ovarian and uterine cancer, she was weeks from being inoperable, during the chemo and radiation (which took 6 months total), the illnesses that came from these treatments made her unbelievably sick.  We went through EVERY nausea med known to man, with costs of 80 dollars or more for 1 med out of the 9 she was on for these issues, do you want to know what helped her?  What made her heal?  What gave her nausea relief?  Allowed her to nourish her body with something as simple as food?  Marijuana!  after 5 ER visits and over 1000.00 in meds that didn't work, I have a friend who uses mj recreationally that absolutely insisted me I give my wife some,  I am absolutely convinced that my friend was told by God to start smoking mj early in his life so when my wife got cancer, I would trust him enough to allow my wife to use something illegal.  This man is an Angel and no one will tell me different.  I never imagined I would break the law but I was desperate!  My wife was dying right before my eyes and the meds the doctors were giving her were the cause.  My friend saved my wife's life, as well as her surgeon.  Thank you lord for giving me a friend, who uses mj, that h

Hey Star! I concede that I am always amazed by people that weigh in on an issue by saying "I heard", "someone told me", or I read and then portaying it as fact. I have smoked on and off all my life, mostly off when jobs required. I have 0 issues with it and would love to see it legalized.

Moneykk, I understand about nerve pain, as I, too, suffer some from it, but do not agree that suicide is the answer, you may find yourself on the other side in a worse condition.  My doctor gave me pain medicine for it when the pain becomes unendurable, but, so far, I have only ever had to take very few of them---maybe three times, then there was most of the pills left when they finally expired, but who am I to judge your level of pain, or your tolerance for it, so speak with your doctor about it, and then follow his/her advice, but, please, do not resort to suicide, that is never a good option to anything!

This lil ray of starshine must be confused about her diagnosis if she thinks anyone with nerve pain can take an "occasional" pill.  It doesn't work like that!  Nerve pain is usually treated "off label" with powerful anti-seizure meds that also happen to work for these issues.  They not only have a cumulative effect & have to be taken on a daily basis, but it's dangerous to stop taking them cold turkey because it leaves you at risk for a seizure even if you've never had one.  If Star only took 3 pills out of her scrip, sorry, it's not a med specifically targeted to nerve pain & she doesn't have it.

Also, nerve pain can feel like someone has doused you in gasoline & dropped a match on it.  It's a huge, burning, excruciating pain that will wake you up screaming in agony.  With meds it subsides to a prickling annoyance that is a walk in the park compared to what it's like without them.  My EMG only puts mine into the "mild" range of the ranking scale & I cannot imagine what it's like for people who slide into "moderate" or "severe" if "mild" is this bad.  Do they want to take a hacksaw to themselves & rip off the offending limb(s)?Crying

People with nerve pain go to "pain management" (you'll note it's not called "pain eradication").  In order to remain a patient & continue receiving legal meds for a legitimate & horribly painful medical condition, pain management patients are subjected to random drug testing mandated by the federal government.  We pee in cups & can be sent to rehab for 6 mos & forced to pee constantly if the urine sample tests positive for marijuana.  If after 6 mos there is the merest trace of pot in it, then the govt has the right to cut off your legal pain meds. Disappointed

What does that say, folks?

Buz or Pot??? I've been smoking pot for over 30yrs. Which is worse? Well how many people are in the hospital for smoking pot? pot doesn't kill your liver, you don't pass out, and no matter what people  want you to believe here you do not get addicted to pot. What the government doesn't want you to know is their is more money trying to stop it then selling it!!!! Also what the Government wont tell you is all the lobest in Washington trying to stop the legalization of pot from all the buz companies. Pot smokers don't leave can's and bottles all over the place!!! just a roach , or two....8)
