Avoiding foreclosure? It's a piece of cake

New Jersey woman bakes to make mortgage payment, tastes success beyond expectations.

In a time of crisis, Angela Logan turned to her kitchen.

Faced with a July 26 payment of $2,559.54 to her mortgage lender, Logan decided to sell 100 homemade "mortgage apple cakes" to friends and family for $40 each to help avoid foreclosure.

They must be pretty darn good: What started last week as 42 orders for the double-layered cakes (covered in butter, cream cheese and vanilla frosting) has turned into something much bigger. As of Tuesday, she had more than 500 orders, including an order from Iraq and one from Hong Kong.

Logan, a divorced mother of three sons, has owned her home in Teaneck, N.J., for 20 years. She started to have financial difficulties after a contractor cost her $50,000 in damages. She applied to the "Making Home Affordable" program after receiving a foreclosure notice in January.  Logan has to make three payments of about $2,500 by Oct. 1 in order to keep her home.

Soon Logan's problem was how she could possibly bake hundreds of cakes in her small kitchen. Teaneck's health officer notified Logan that it was against state law to use her house as a commercial kitchen, The Associated Press reported. So the Hilton Hasbrouck Heights is letting her use the hotel's kitchen, where she can produce up to 10 cakes at a time.

"It's been like a dream," Logan told the Bergen Record. "I am speechless. I won't call it overwhelming, because when you get a blessing, you just don't complain. I'll take overwhelming over fear and anguish any day of the week."

This woman makes me smile.Smile  She's not sitting there waiting for the money to fall out of the sky or for someone to rescue her.  She come up with a fantastic idea and I just ordered one of her cakes.   I sell homes and see too many foreclosures.  God bless her and her family.   I hope her children know how special their Mom is to them.  She's a winner!  Listen up you single guys in her town...this is a real woman.  Oh, and I can bake, too.  As a matter of fact, I make an apple cake very much likes hers.   I am buying it to help her and will serve it for my sister's birthday.

Hey this is giving me ideas!!  My favorite frosting is what Mrs. Logan is using on her cakes.  But I have some other talents as well and I'm going to see if I can market those to get myself out of debt.  Congratulations, Mrs. Logan and that cake looks marvelous.  When I get a few dollars to rub together, I'll order one from you.  God Bless You and Yours.

This is great.  Someone who's actually willing to work and put it on the line to survive- and not simply beg for a bailout like everyone else.  When she sells steak instead of cake count me in.

Necessity has always been the mother of invention... over many years and numerous countries.  Look around most of the things we have were derived from someone creating a solution to a challenge.  Fortunately we all get challenges to teach us... it is how one looks at the challenge... a good thing or not, that determines whether we learn the lesson and progress or get upset and blame everyone else for our problems.  As soon as people take repsonsibility for their actions and stop trying to put the onus on someone else... the solutions will become evident and we can all work our way out of these times.  To me these are the times to make great personal growth by realizing what is most important, setting a plan to achieve them and taking the steps to fulfilment... like putting the talents and energy for these baked goods.  Good on you for taking the bowl in hand and doing something positive with it.

Headwiser/Adawg 25 - My goodness you sound bitter.  There is an old saying that goes something along the lines of "work like it all depends on you and pray like it all depends on God" - well apparently she did!  What would you have had her do?  Should she have looked to Obama to solve her problems, take care of her mortgage, put gas in her car and pay her medical bills?  America was built on good old fashioned elbow grease and inginuity - oh yeah, and a heavy dose of faith in God.  Too many people have bought into the idea that the "Government" (i.e. the new god) must and will save them.  Good luck with that, they will have a looooong wait.  God bless her for being a true American!

In life I've had to get creative to solve difficult issues.  I'm single and 55.  I couldn't afford to pay my mortgage and quarterly association fees any more.  I did see a way out . . . . by placing a personal ad stating:  "I'll make your house into a home".   I had many responses from single men in my age group.  After interviewing potential life-long male companions over coffee at a book store, I choose a man my age who is retired.  He invited me to share his home with him.  I now have a new life partner and new home.  We are intellectually compatiable and get along well together.

Making something that people need and want to pay bills is good. People always need food everyday. The prices are comparable to some  I've seen on QVC for specialty cheese cakes so she is doing well . Maybe we could get our country out of debt with the same thinking- making products people need and charging enough to get out of debt and stay out of debt with customers who probably didn't buy cakes from anyone else so the new business is not competing with existing bakeries but starting a demand for something new.

I believe in faith. You just don't give up. something always comes to you. We should be thanking the people that bought the cakes. That is a lot of money to buy a cake. but they gave up something for someone to keep something. I hope this is something she might want to do now keep up the good work.
