Big Mac or . . . Angus burger?

McDonald's adds higher-quality beef to its menu.

Posted by Elizabeth Strott on Thursday, July 2, 2009 8:18 AM

McDonaldMcDonald's (MCD) is now catering to true beef lovers. Patrons of the fast food chain now have a big burger option beyond the Quarter Pounder and Big Mac.

The fast food chain will start selling Angus burgers today, at about $4 each. The burgers are made with one-third of a pound of Angus beef and will be sold in all of the company's U.S. locations for the next several months.

"Customers are looking for great-tasting burgers at a value that only McDonald's can offer," spokeswoman Danya Proud said. "These premium burgers are a tremendous value compared to similar fast-casual and midscale offers."

The new burgers feature a braided sesame seed bun, a thicker tomato slice and red onion, Dan Coudreaut, executive chef for McDonald's, told Bloomberg News. Hickory-smoked bacon is also available on the burgers. McDonald's has been testing the burger in about 1,000 restaurants across the country for the past several years.

In 2001, McDonald's introduced the Big N' Tasty, the last burger to be added to its menu. The precursors to that burger were the McDLT and then the Big Xtra.

McDonald's shares were down 78 cents, or 1.3%, to $57.44 this afternoon.

The economic slowdown might be a hurdle for McDonald's new burger, according to one analyst. "Given the recession, it's harder to sell a premium item," Tom Forte, an analyst at Telsey Advisors, said to Bloomberg News. "It’s important that they have a menu that offers both premium and value."

McDonald's has thrived during the recession, as consumers turned to lower-priced fast-food instead of dining out at more expensive restaurants. The company has also focused on its expanding McCafe coffee products, which have become a competitor to Starbucks' (SBUX) coffees.

First of all, if you assume that 1) all obese people live on fast food and junk food and never exercise; or 2) that thin people or those that are more "average" sized (whatever that is) live on healthy foods - then you are WRONG!  I was raised on a farm and we ate what we raised - lots of fresh veggies (or home canned or frozen).  My diet growing up was low carb, moderate protein and lots and lots of veggies.  AND I WAS AN OBESE CHILD, OBESE TEEN AND OBESE YOUNG ADULT.   I have since lost 180 lbs.  But, during all those years of obesity, McDonald's was a rare treat - the nearest one was 30 miles away from my small town - and dessert was saved for Sundays!  I might also add that my blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, triglycerides, etc were amazingly low.  My doctor said I was a walking contraindication.  When I got older and got a "real job" (typing all day), I started exercising in a gym.  It was at that point that my joints started bothering me.  All those years of walking back and forth from my friends' house to mine or to my grandma's never hurt - but the gym did me in.  I will admit that the obesity contributed to my joint destruction, but not as much as the lupus we discovered I had did.  I didn't get the amount of dates that "skinny" girls did, but I've had my share of boyfriends...mainly because I've never been afraid of who I was.  Is my body perfect now?  Nope.  Are any of you the owner of perfect bodies?  I doubt it - we are all different.  I wish people would stop HATING...hating fat people, hating obesity, hating themselves because they don't look like a fashion model...just stop...if someone wants to eat a burger - let them eat the burger!  Try being responsible for yourselves and your behavior and let people live the way they will.

The key to a long life with fewer medical problems is to control 'your self' (good genetics is a major factor). 'Excess' (of anything) is the problem. Enjoy the burger 'occasionally'. Do not eat it every meal. Use common sense (rare) and the odds start to work in your favor. Exercise (work 'also rare') to burn off the calories you take in. Whether the calories are 'Fast or Slow' in their preparation has little effect. Self responsibility is a rare trait. Blaming others is much easier. DaFlikkers

To the haters:

If you don't eat fast food, then stuff some fancy crap in your pie hole and STFU.

I eat lots of fast food.  So I believe I can say this new Angus burger is one of the best being served right now. It definitely compares well next to way more expensive burgers.

I LOVE burgers. And this one is very good. It's that simple.

McDonalds is a crap hole.  All of their food is garbage just like their ethics, if it was up to me I would close them ALL.  At least have some respect for yourself and go to BurgerKing or jackinthecrack which I don't eat fast food anymore PERIOD.

I used to eat as much as I could at McDonalds when I was a kid but as I grew older I stayed away.  The hamburgers just did not taste like they used to, after being away probably 10 years I tried a couple of their dollar cheese burgers and found that McDonalds had recovered the old taste.  I occasionally will eat a couple of the cheese burgers even though they have gone up a little, I get my order as take out and do not eat or drink anything from there to save money and cut calories.

Went to a local McD's this week.  It seemed to me the'v pushed prices up, while other fast casual places are pushing pricing down.  McD's needs to remember their mistake last time they left value for Premium.  Cheap, tasty, clean & fast...thats the recipe McD's, I hope you dont forget it.
