The Misery Index: Jobless rates by metro area

Where is unemployment getting worse fastest? Here's a look at the jobless rates in 372 metro areas and how they've changed in the past year.

By MSN Money staff

Data released April 1 show unemployment rates in February were up year over year in every one of the country's 372 metropolitan areas, with joblessness in El Centro, Calif., worst in the U.S. at 24.5%.

The report, from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, also shows that more than 100 areas recorded unemployment rates of 10% or worse, while 20 areas had rates under 5%. The Houma, La., area had the nation's lowest unemployment rate in February at 3.5%. Overall, 158 areas posted unemployment rates above the nationwide figure of 8.9%, 206 areas reported rates below it, and eight areas had the same rate.

The charts here compare unemployment rates for all 372 metro areas for February 2008 and February 2009 and notes the change year over year. Unemployment rose 12.5 percentage points year over year in Elkhart-Goshen, Ind., from 5.5% to 18%, the biggest increase in the country.

The ranking column is based on February 2009 data. Unemployment data for cities typically lag several weeks behind monthly data for states.
